Ketamine Integration

What is integration?

This term refers to the processing of the ketamine infusion experience through a variety of activities. One might engage in integration by spending time in nature, journaling about the experience and the insights gained from it, or by working with an integration therapist. Through integration one can reflect and act upon the insights gained from a ketamine experience. Integration is the framework to process the experience and provides an opportunity for continued growth after the infusion is over.

Why integration therapy?

Working with a highly skilled therapist before and after ketamine sessions can help to optimize the benefits of treatment. Prior to a ketamine session, a therapist may help prepare you by assisting with organizing your thoughts and intentions (what you are bringing to the session). Coming prepared for an infusion can help guide the experience in a way that feels productive for you. Due to the rapid antidepressant effects of ketamine and induced neuroplasticity, there is an optimal window during treatment where there is more spaciousness to develop insights and encourage change. With this spaciousness, a therapist can help get to some root causes of patterns and assist with deepened insights. This allows for a greater capacity to grow and start shifting the patterns we have become trapped in. Based on the research, the addition of therapy with ketamine has been associated with positive outcomes and shows promise.
